Yeah, that's what I do too. My character is spread across like 8 sheets of paper. Treasure is written everywhere. I frequently don't level on time. I remember once when everyone was getting really annoyed with my Wizard. They were like Dude, what have you been doing? Why aren't you casting AE spells? I'm like, I don't have any. FIREBALL?!?! I'm like, I don't have it yet. Confusion ensues on their part. They try to find out where my levels went. They ask. I'm like Level 4 Wizard. They stare. Dude! We're level 7. I'm like Cool, 4th level spells! They smack their heads.
It tends to always be hurtful and not helpful, so I guess the DM has never had a need to complain [it's not like I'm ADDING extra levels, for example]
