met a gamer at the barber!

When we had cable TV installed at our new house last year, the installer turned out to be a gamer. He saw our bookcases of gaming books, and exclaimed in joyous awe: "You guys game???!?!"

Turns out that he and his brother are both gamers, and they were looking for a new game. Long story short, we added them to our Thursday night group and they've been great!

In college, I found out a mutual acquaintence was a gamer when I made a comment about someone being evil, and he replied, "Chaotic Evil, more likely..." :)

More currently, I've discovered that at least two people I work with (besides one member of my gaming group) were D&D gamers a long time ago. Small world, as they say.

I've had occasions like that. I was at a restaurant with some friends, and the waiter came over and asked my friend if he needed an iced tea refill just before we were leaving. My friend said "Nah, I'm good," and the waiter replied "Good? Well, from what I overheard of your conversation, you strike me more as the chaotic neutral type."

I was wearing a Brujah (VtM) t-shirt on the bus and that crazy hot goth chick came up to me to talk. One thing led to another and I got a phone number and we planned a date. At the movies we talked more and I ended up figuring up she was 16 (I was 21...). So Canadian age of consent is 14 (talks right now of bringing up to 16) but even then there's a reason why I don't date girls that young. Once we were past gaming and music there wasn't a lot to talk about, because we weren't on the same maturity level at all.

Now the irony is I'm 29 and been with my 24 y-o gf for 5 years, so I guess I'm a big old hypocrite and if she had met me 3 years later we might have hit it off.

I don't recall encountering too many gamers in broader society at large, but I've definitely marked myself as one.

I was taking a course called "Biblical Themes in Literature," in which the objective was to discuss how the Bible and Biblical themes and imagery keep showing up in books, film, TV, etc., like the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse (from Revelations).

So we were discussing an exerpt from a horror novel in which a child was being described in great detail, using images that were linked to certain specific devils.

The prof (Dr. Bates Hoffer) asked what was being alluded to when the child was described one way, then another, through about 12 different allusions.

Unlike my usual self, I actually raised my hand and answered one "Belial" and another "Lucifer" and a third "Pazzuzzu," etc., all the time head down & scribbling notes, not realizing until the final answer that I was the only one even raising my hand, Prof. Hoffer had started calling on me by name...and everyone was looking at me.

After the class, 2 girls who knew me asked me how I knew that stuff, joking that Catholics like myself don't usually read the Bible that closely (an unfortunate truth). I responded that all that stuff was in D&D's monster manual.

Man, I knew that the metagaming trend was getting worse. But now it's happening with haircuts? Why can't you just pick a hairstyle that you like instead of trying to squeeze every bit of min/max crunchiness out of it?

If you're confused, read the thread title.

I think it's normal that age differences begin to matter less a few years after school. I suppose it has a lot to do with the kind of life experiences people make in their life...

I work in a store that has a lot of college students working for us. It's not uncommon for a student to be carrying textbooks to study over their break, but when I saw the Exalted book, I knew the guy was a gamer. I brought it up casually and we chat about it every now and again.

It's funny how surprised people are that their supervisors can be geeks too.
