This is from another forum and thread, but it should answer your question.

If the news is about a d20 product, put it in d20 system news. If it is news from a d20 comany not about a d20 product (a newsletter. a column, a free PrC, etc) put it in community news...Generally, all news relating to fan or community websites (setting sites, fan sites, D&D resourse sites, Mortality Radio) go under community news.

I think that magazines that cost money (i.e. Dungeon, Dragon, maybe Gaming Frontiers, that sort of thing), go in Magazines and Periodicals. If they're free, then they go in Community News (?). That's what I get out of the above.

What are the rules for which category a news article goes in?
Specificly what differentiates D20 System, Community and Magazines?

Well, there are no rules. Believe it or not, it has always just been played by ear, putting thngs where seems appropriate.

However, the above seems like a decent guideline. Mags & periodicals is specifically for actual paid-for magazines, as opposed to e-zines and so forth.

I'm curious, though, as to why you're asking. Does it actually matter? :)

Ah but Kenzer's free zine got put in Magazines, Emerald Press/Horade's free zine got put in community. Was just wondering what exactly the criteria was. :D

In the grand scheme of things no. But since I am getting into this, would just like to know the difference. :p

There we go - proof that there are no specific rules. )

The thing to note about Kenzer's mag is that it's not a D&D mag, and would probably be seen as such if it were in Community News with the other e-zines. It just kinda needed to be separated out a bit from the actual D&D/D20 news.

Ah, thanks Morrus. :)

Another point on Kenzer's mag is that it is normally a print, subscription magazine, AFAIK. It was just this issue that was put online for free.
