Metacritic Ratings for new fall shows

I was looking at Metacritic to see what sort of ratings the new fall TV shows were getting. I thought it would be interesting to keep track and see how we feel about the shows compared to their ranking.

For those unaware of Metacritic, it is a site that tracks the ratings various critics give on Movies, TV Shows, Video Games, Music and Books. It then weighs those rankings based on the critics reliability and prestige. After that they give it a score from 1-100, with 100 being the best. Rankings in red are considered "generally negative" (unless below 20, then "extreme dislike or disgust"_, those in yellow are "mixed or average" and those in green are "generally positive" (if over 80 then "universal acclaim").

Like Rotten Tomatoes for TV?

I see the network agreed with the low score on Nashville, which has been cancelled already. I hadn't even heard of the show until I saw a blurb about the nixing, and I'm a T.V. junkie.

The primary differences seem to be that Metacritic sticks to critic ratings and keeps amateur ratings separate. It also search print publications that might not be online. Lastly, they weight the reviews. Certain publications or critics have more weight behind them (for example, the New York Times Book Review).

Edit: Also, Rotten Tomatoes just seems to focus on how many like something. Metacritic factors in how much they like it.

It's much more stable with movies (the only thing it did initially) because of the wider selection of movie reviews.

My god. Cane is probably the worst pilot I have ever seen. I'm flummoxed.

I heard it was very soap opera heavy. Are you a fan of soap operas?

If you read the comments in the review list you'll see a very scattered number of opinions from "A terrifically cast, intriguing series." to "One of those slack, campy throwbacks that really ought to be thrown out"

I lasted about three minutes with Big Bang Theory before I turned it off, so.... I'm not sure how well this mirrors my tastes. But it's interesting. Thanks.

I tend to use it to decide which movies to see. I look at the general ratings, and then go to the page and browse the reviews for the reviewers who have a similar taste to mine. Roger Ebert, for example, tends to have similar opinions to mine.

That makes sense, I think. Reaper is getting all sorts of acclaim.

I'll throw in:

Chuck - 74

Which I think is a little high, myself. And while I know it's not new:

Eureka - 62

Which deserves to be much higher.

Having just caught tonights repeat of Reaper I think it deserves every bit of its ultra high rating. By far the best new show of the season so far IMO.
