Metamagic Rod + your own feat

Thus explcit use of the term "slot" in the one paragraph and the term "level" in the other is enough to convince me (barring errata, FAQ, or Sage Advice).

Thanks for the help all.

Before you say it isn't defined when use-activated is actually used, when was the last time you were affected by a potion before you drank it?
When that Drunken Master decided to bean me with it.

As a tangential question: What happens when you use a normal metamagic rod of maximize on an empowered fireball? Does it do all 150% damage w/o rolling, or the ordinary version?

The same thing that happens when you cast a maximized, empowered fireball using your own feats (with an 8th-level spell slot). Using a rod is just like using your own feat, except that the spell slot level isn't increased.

The rules are not explicit in regards to metamagic rods, but I know that at least in the WOTC Living Greyhawk campaign they applied the rules for putting metamagic feats in potions and wands to using a metamagic rod. (i.e. You factor in the level adjustments from any metamagic feats the caster applies then check to see if it has exceed the level of spell that the rod can affect it.)
