Metamagic?

As there are no actual spells in 4e, there are no metamagic feats to accompany them. It would have been nice to see "metamagic" feats for some of the rituals--they are fairly close to being magic, at least. Perhaps something that gave a penalty to your skill check for the ritual.

For the most part, it doesn't exist as it did in 3.5.

There are still feats that modify powers, but they're limited.

Let's see... feats that you might think of as metamagic:
Arcane Reach
Inescapable Force
Golden Wyvern Adept (j/k, it's called Spell Accuracy)

Basically, it's changed a lot. There's still a lot of feats that you'll like, but nothing like the diversity of old metamagic.

Oh, and to the OP's original question: A lot of metamagic-type effects can be found in magic item abilities. There's one in a lower-level staff that lets you increase the blast area of a spell by 1, 1/day, for example.

Surprisingly, the Paragon Paths don't do much for actually changing up spell area/effects.
