I was going to argue Corsair's point but then I thought about it... while my party has a bunch of random stuff (boots of speed, cloak of arachnida, slippers of spiderclimb), most of our money is spent on the 'big stuff': every AC buff (spread out), stat bonuses, cloak of resistance. And healing (wands of CLW, mainly).
The fact that we feel we can't afford to buy other gear is, I suppose, an indication that the price of that other gear isn't low enough. Personally, I've always reacted to this situation as 'the core system is annoying in how 'necessary' it feels to get the standard gear,' but you can look at it either way.
Mind you, I think this changes over levels; at higher levels (we're 10th) cash starts really escalating, so spending a few thousand on marvelous pigments and feather tokens is more reasonable.
