I'm actually rather surprised that my "death by constipation" method didn't draw fire from the rodent lovers out there.

Spend a few hours with a scrabbling rat in your wall and most rodent lovers can be broken.

My cat recently taught me that she does not, in fact, want to catch and EAT the mouse so much as she wants to catch and PLAY with the mouse. *shakes head* Mighty hunters, indeed!

Don't feed your cat for two days. It'll eat a mouse after that.

You should cut a hole in the wall, cram a cat in there, and then brick up the wall. When you think the cat has gotten the rat, cut another hole and repeat the process with a dog to get the cat. Repeat until you run out of progressively bigger animals.

Reminds me of a little diddy called 'There Was an Old Woman...'.

[singing] But I don't know why she swalloed the fly. I guess she'll die. [/singing]

Ahhh, my childhood. :)

I can vouch for this method. Just be warned that shoving a bengal tiger through a hole in your wall is a little tricky.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks! So far I'm going the poison/cut off their entry route. And I'm 96% sure it's a rat. We found some droppings about an inch long behind our washer. Of course, if I don't post for a while, see Joshua Dyal's post above.

Me and Brown Jenkins down by the schoolyard...

Put steel wool in the holes. Especially with rats, it's the only thing that will prevent them from getting back through. And if they do try to eat it, it'll kill them.

We're off to the store after work for some. Anything that causes the little bastard discomfort is okay with me.

PS: And thanks a LOT for all the great feedback. It's been a load off my mind to know this braintrust exists on the board. As a new homeowner, I'm still getting used to all the small bits you need to know in order to survive with sanity.
