I was with you up until they released D&D Lego.
True that. I wish we would go back to the halcyon days of yore with REAL D&D when we had Magic Users, not Wizards of the Coast, and none of this commercial crud.

Yes. I'm aware my complaints about merchandizing sounds like it's a new thing, and I even complain about Star Wars in my post. I do remember Star Wars bubble bath, beach towels, breakfast cereal, and other things that don't start with the letter "B."True that. Pinkertons: "Challenge accepted."Your books are not getting burned guy.

It's nothing new for D&D or any other fandom. The thing that's new is my tiredness of it, my seeing it as an extension of a corporate promotional juggernaut that has little to do about my enjoyment of what the hobby actually is.
Buying a Yankees cap isn't the same as watching baseball. Collecting D&D Funkos isn't playing D&D. I don't feel like engaging with the brand in this way anymore.
Pinkertons did not burn books, they grabbed cards that were not supposed to be out for months.Pinkertons: "Challenge accepted."
It wasn't the D&D makeup set or Crocs that crossed the line for you??I was with you up until they released D&D Lego.
I do like a good T-shirt.BEDSHEETS. Derek might have had the Kenner Millennium Falcon, because of course he did, but you will never take the memory of my Star Wars sheets from me!
Fair. I think I've said this 83 times recently, but parasocial relationships are a helluva drug. Personally, I really vibe with the history and academic side of RPGs and D&D especially, but I don't have any desire for T-Shirts, or Hats, or other stuff.
But others feel differently.
And while consumerism has always been with us, I would argue that the elevation of the brand and commercialism has accelerated in the past two decades. The '90s was a brief rebuke to it ("selling out" redux) but now? It's everywhere.
It's all good, though, I guess. It's just different. For people growing up with Instagram and TikTok influencers, this hypersaturation feels normal.
