Midnight - 2005

For what its worth, it's solicited for an August release in the latest Previews (monthly book that comic stores use to order material). Here's the solicit.

MIDNIGHT FURY OF SHADOW BOXED SET
The endless hordes of the Shadow in the North are marshaling for one final thrust into the heart of Erethor, the vast forest homeland of the elves. If this epic military campaign is successful, it could mean the end of organized resistance to Izrador in Eredane. This limited edition boxed set rooted in the world of Midnight features a DM screen customized for Midnight's unique take on the d20 System, a huge full-color poster map of the continent of Eredane, a sourcebook detailing the battlefields, armies, heroes, and villains of the campaign, as well as abundant adventure hooks, a wealth of background source material, special edition Midnight character sheets, regional maps, DM aids, and more! Scheduled to ship in August 2004.

Looks like the retail price will be $49.95. I don't have a better picture yet, but here's what I have. Link

How good is Midnight? I haven't read it, but I've heard a lot about it. Should I start tracking stuff down for it?

If you like low fantasy in a gritty setting where magic is less common and the story can be compared to LotR if Sauron won... it's an excellent setting.

The main setting book is very well written and the feat-based magic system seems to work well. Characters and races are slightly more powerful than core to make up for the lack of abundant healing. There's more details to it than this, but the reviews on this site do a much better job selling the book than I ever could.

Mattan,

Also if I say the following: Midnight alternate Sageself and Pimp Daddy, in regards to how good the setting and also a person is about pimping/making the knowledge of the setting available, you know it good. ;)

Don't forget Paul S.Kemp's upcoming trilogy of novels set in the world of Midnight. I have no idea when the first comes out, but I would guess early 2005?

Thanks Matthan,

I love the Midnight setting, in fact I have bought every book just to read them ( haven't played yet ). That and Scarred Lands are my two favorite 3rd edition settings... Track down the core book and check it out.

I too have gotten the Midnight bug in a BIG way...

A word of warning on their first published module "Crown of Shadow" if you ever do run it... the authors expect you to do a little work on your own.

I'm running it now and I love it... there are no little grey boxes with text to read to your players. The plot is so sweeping that you can plug in your own mini adventures along the way. It covers pretty much every geographical location in the setting to give new DMs and Players (new to the setting) a feel for the world.

A lot of people don't like it because they say it railroads the players. I agree to a point... but only on the point that EVERY module railroads players towards a final ending. Because the module is more-or-less just a plot overview with some encounters set up along the way I feel that it gives a DM a lot more flexibility than some modules I've seen in the past. If you want a module that hands you the adventure on a silver platter the "Crown of Shadow" is not for you. If you like to customize your modules and have a bit of freedom with it the you'll get a lot out of it.

Gee... I should have posted this in the reviews section. :)

That sounds great! At last, a DnD setting worth writing novels about...

Hopefully they'll avoid the pitfalls of the FR and DL novels and keep the novels from making huge canon changes in the setting. After a while it seemed like the heroes in the other novels made the PCs inconsequential since they always saved the day. That is why I got sick of FR in particular. Elminster was always there to save the day. One particularly STUPID idea was for Mystra to have total control of the weave and have the ability to deny magic to anyTHING (even a god). That became nothing but fuel for geeky-gamer one-upmanship.
