[Midnight] Escape from Shadow

Torak, Orc Channeler.

jeremy_dnd said:
Torak had been lucky, so far. But one pirate, after running one of the guards through with his sword, turned and saw Torak in the mists. He held his sword aloft and charged Torak, still bound in his chains.

"You are going to slaughter innoncent, defenseless person ? Och, how orcy You humans grew. Think it trough again, I'm skilled healer and will be more useful alive than dead !" Shouted Torak very loudly in clear and fearless voice, before trying to duck to one side to avoid inevitable blow. Damn chains, to die such naughty word death. His heart was pounding in his chest as if to burst, warcries of other orcs driving him almost on the edge of madness. With all his willpower he stopped himself from attacking the man with bloodthirsty scream.

OOC:
Initiative: WTF ? natural 20 ... ? DM, I swear that I'm using online dice roller without any cheating.
Well, Torak starts with initiative 24, for the good beggining of the day.
First trying Diplomacy ... result: 21 to change guy's attiude from hostile to unfriendly, hopefully. If it wouldn't work try to cast defensively Mage Armor Concentration check: OMG ! fat, bare ... 17-teen ! Echem, Concentration check: 19.

If the Diplomacy fails :

Next round, if man will be still hostile and attacking ... And skinny hide of Torak would be still at least partially intact ... Well, Torak will try to disarm the man ... with bare chains.
Attack: 6 (roll 7, +1 Str, +1 Orcs fighting ... more than 10, perhaps ?, +1 darkness, -4 unproficient weapon) ...no comment.
Third round, if Torak will remain alive and able to, and man still hostile ... Torak will try to repeat the disarming sequence. Agg ! natural 1. Wich mean tha the is at the mercy of pirate, or mamaged to suffocate himself. I doubt that Torak would survive past this. :\
Backup character ready at evening. Erleander Quickened Rogue. :p

If the Diplomacy, miraculously, won't fail:

Torak will just assume Total Defense stance and ask of freeing him once the combat end. While shouting encouragments to Humans. Force of Personality. Check Result: 21, Inspire Courage. THis shouldempower also Karita, for he sees her as ally.

Karita

She heard the arrows comming, and it triggered an old memory of scrambling through brush; darting behind trees; wet mud underfoot; angry hunter-men close on her heels; the snicker of fletched death close by; missiles raining through leaves. It made her neck bunch up instinctively, and she lowered herself to the deck with a plaintive whine, minimizing her size as a target.

The beastwoman’s eyes flicked constantly, nervously as she human raiders board the ship. When the battle became a melee, she started to shift her body too and fro, trying to get free of the chains as orcs lumber through the mist, vardatches sweeping clumsily at their foes, and humans try to mob the larger warriors and bring them down with numbers and ruthless skill. Earlier attempts to squeeze or shew her way free from the chain had proved to karita the fruitlessness of such activity; but the swelling battle makes her desperate to escape.

Then Lokksul drew close. The wounded, recruit-fresh orc tried to get behind Karita, but the heady brew of fear and aggression bubbling in her veins disinclined her from trying to gauge his intentions. Instead, she lunged repeatedly at the orc with snapping teeth and blows from her callused hands.

OOC: Initiative 9.

I assume that being chained up carries similar penalties to being entangled; -2 to attacks, -4 Dex.

If Lokksul comes within range, Karita makes a full-round defensive attack, raising her AC to 15 (back down to 13 with entanglement); she’s hoping to warn him off rather than take him down. Attack results: Claw 15 (4 sub), Claw -6 (no chance :P), Bite 1 (nada).

If not, untrained Escape Artist check: result 22.

Methuselas

There was yelling all around from above deck and down here in the hold as Methuselas picked his moment to disarm the orc slayer. Unfortunately, the chains binding his hands were caught on the orc's shoulder as Methuselas tried to grab the vardatch.

"Damn... "

At this point, an arrow fired from above sliced with a thud into the orc's body but where Methuselas could not see in the shadows.

With all his strength, Methuselas then tried to grapple the orc to bring him down and finish him off.
[sblock]OOC
Initiative:
[9] +2 = 11 Initiative
Touch Melee rolls:
[14] +4 = 18 Touch Melee
Assuming this hits the target, opposed grapple check for Methuselas is:
[19] +8 = 27 Grapple Check
Dealing 1d6 + 3 damage if successful:
[2] +3 = 5 Damage
PS: I know those two results look too good but that's what was rolled - I have no need to fool around with such things. In short you can trust me.

Methuselas looks at the other Dorn while attacking the orc, and yells with exertion,
"Pick up the weapon laddie and... give him some dornish pride... while I... wrench his head off..."

Abdiel

Abdiel lay still while the vardatch blade approached his neck, all of his muscles tensed waiting for the killing blow. Abdiel's thoughts turned to Brianna and the twins, praying that something or someone would keep an eye on them. All of a sudden the orc was attacked by the Dorn that lay on the shelf above him. The Dorn spoke in a language that Adbiel could not understand, but while he could not comprehend the words, he did understand the urgency. Before Abdiel could react an arrow came from above and hit the orc. The orc's blood spattered him, it was hot and sticky and it awoke his instincts. The fight for his freedom had begun in earnest.

"Hold him there while I kill him" he called to the Dorn. He took the large sword in his hands and tried to make contact with the orc slaver.

OOC: How much freedom of movement do we have? Seeing as we are at the edge of the shelves, do we have enough leeway to stand up? Do I have enough room to swing the vardatch to attempt to break the chains holding myself or the Dorn?

Abdiel will grab the vardatch and swing at the orc.
Initiative: [13] + 4 = 17
To hit: [16] + 3 (Attack Bonus) - 2 (Prone) - 2 (Chained) = 15 (-4 if the vardatch is an exotic weapon [I don't have my book with me])
Damage: 6 + 2 (Str) = 8

If successful, or if the orc is dead before it is Abdiel's turn, while keeping an eye open for others entering the hold, Abdiel will attempt to break either his chains, or if he is unable to effectively swing at them, he will break the Dorn's chains, warning him in Erenlander before doing so.

Chapter I
Page Three

OOC: Dirigible, you're right, I am assuming being chained will have the same consequences as being entangled: -2 Attack, -4 Dex.

Torak -
The pirate must have heard the orc’s words, for as he charged his eyes widened in surprise to hear the orc speak in his own language of innocence and healing. It was then that he noticed the chains binding the orc to the deck, but his momentum hurtled him forward. He twisted his grip on his sword, hoping to divert the blow, but Torak ducked directly into the sword’s path. The blade slid cleanly into Torak’s shoulder as the pirate barreled into him, and he felt his blood flow freely down his arm.

The pirate wrenched out the blade. “I’m not sorry, orc.” He growled. Several blood stains darkened his leather armor and fresh splatter of blood dotted his face. He brought his sword up to Torak’s face, the blood still dripping along its edge. “But I am curious why one of your kind is chained up as a slave. After we find out, your death will be reserved for the Captain.”

As the pirate glared at him, Torak saw over his shoulder two orcs with bloody vardatches, bits of gore still caught within the serrated edges, charge the pirate from behind.

OOC: Rushed Diplomacy check made as a full-round action at –10 penalty to change attitude of hostile enemy: automatic failure. Not enough to prevent the pirate from charging, but enough to instill a –2 penalty to his attack and damage. The attack still hits, but only for 8 damage. Torak hp 2.

Abdiel and Methuselas -
The orc still hovered over Abdiel, its eyes glazing over, but not yet dead. Abdiel grasped the vardatch with one hand and dragged his second chained arm in order to clasp the pommel with both. The chains bit into his wrists and the confined space reduced his ability to maneuver, but he now had the weapon, and the dazed orc did not. Abdiel pierced the orc’s armor just as Methuselas above him wrapped the chain around the orc’s neck. The orc lost his footing in the slippery hold, and crashed down, the chain twisting his neck as the vardatch wrenched and twisted in his guts. Neither Methuselas nor Abdiel were sure who had dealt the lethal blow, but as each leaned over they saw the orc staring blankly upward with unseeing eyes.

OOC: Eonthar, the vardatch is a martial weapon, if grasped two-handed. If you would like to begin trying to break the chains, roll for damage in your post. But there is not enought room to stand up until the chains are broken and you leave the shelves.

Karita -
The first swipe of her clawed hand drew blood on the orc’s armor. He wore no protection save for his jerkin, but he proved to be adept at dodging her next attempts. In anger, he swiped her in return with his vardatch, but she easily danced around his blows. In the chaos onboard the deck, amidst the yells and roars of humans and orcs, no one seemed to notice the beastwoman and the orc facing off against each other.

OOC: Escape Artist check takes one full minute at DC 30: check failed.

Karita

The ragged, feral girl gave a hiss of anger as the orc swung its iron talon clumsily at her. Being unable to flee from danger was a mental anguish that drove her to greater fury. She so wanted to escape, but the only recourse available was battle.

“Gohhhh ‘way!” she snarled in broken Erenlander, lunging at the Lokksul again. Her clawless fingers sought flesh or muscle to tear into, and her teeth snapped in the air.

OOC: Karita makes a full attack, not fighting defensively this time. Claw 8 (2hp), Claw 15 (4 hp), Bite 11 (2 hp). AC 11.

Torak, Orc Channeler.

"Backstabbers charging."
Snarled Torak at pirate, before he yelled foercefully at charging orcs. His face being unnaturally, chilligly calm while he stared at them intensely. Blood were flowing from his wound in small rivulets, he knew that this pirate was his best chance of surviving this fight.
"You two. Surrender or die !"

OOC:
First warn pirate, if it is free action, Torak will try to Intimidate Orcs, result: 24 so boyz would back off giving some time for pirate. Next, defensively cast CLW on himself. Concentration check: 21 , I wish I had such high attack rolls. :) Cured HP: 7.

Abdiel, his adrenaline pumping, rejoiced when the Orc dropped, but he knew that this was far from over.

"Keep an eye out for anyone else coming down into the hold while I try to break the chains holding me in place," he called to the Dorn above him as he started hacking at the chains holding him in place.

OOC: Abdiel will wield the Vardatch 2-handed, and start trying to break his chains.
Attack Roll Damage
(d20 + 3 (Attack Bonus) d12 + 2 (Str)
- 2(Chained))

Attack 1: 13 13
Attack 2: 20 8
Attack 3: 20 11
Attack 4: 17 5
Attack 5: 6 5
Attack 6: 13 14
Attack 7: 12 9
Attack 8: 21 (16) 8 or 16 if confirmed

Once Abdiel's chains are broken he will start on the Dorn's chains. Warning him first of course.

If someone comes down into the hold, and seems about to attack, Abdiel will attack him instead.

Chapter I
Page Four

Torak-

The pirate narrowed his eyes in doubt as Torak focused on the two orcs quickly approaching. Either the pirate had heard the pounding of orcish feet on the deck, or had decided to trust the captive orc , but he thrust Torak away from him as he spun to meet the two enemies head-on. Their blades met, all ignoring the feeble attempt of the chained prisoner to stall the orcs. Concentrating, but remaining painfully aware of the surrounding battle, Torak healed himself nearly to full strength, leaving little but an ugly bruise painted across his shoulder. In front of him the pirate downed one orc and met the blade of the other in just enough time.

OOC: I did not resolve the Intimidate check. According to the skill description, one can only attempt to demoralize an opponent with an Intimidate check that you threaten in melee combat.

Abdiel and Methuselas-

Abdiel swung the still-bloodied vardatch at the chain connecting his legs to those of the other slaves. The angle was not the best, in the confined hold, but eventually he was able to break apart the iron links. His feet and arms still bound, he sidled off the bunk edge, and turned to do the same to the Dorn above him. With more room and a more precise attack, Abdiel burst the chains of the Dorn with one swing of the weapon.

OOC: It took the first six attacks to break the chains, but only the one crit to break Methuselas's! Recall, though, that both still have chains binding their feet and hands. Not a big deal when wielding a vardatch two-handed, but it does otherwise incur the standard penalties for being chained.

Karita-

Her first swipe at the dodging orc failed to find his flesh, but with an animal snarl she leapt at him as he came in close with his vardatch, missing her by inches as she landed on him with all four of her limbs. One claw bit deep into his side, but her mouth could not find purchase as he thrashed beneath her. With a mighty shove, he forced her away, inhaling deeply with ragged breaths, standing just out of her reach.

Lokksul raised his vardatch and charged her, yelling in his own language, “Die, dog!

Methuselas

Methuselas spits upon the fallen orc carcass while saying,
"Thanks for that laddie but can you be breaking my chains with that thing? I canny a hit a thing with my hands-a-feet tied"

Methuselas holds his chains out to the Dorn with the vardatch whilst looking around in urgency to see if there are more of the orcs coming into the hold.
