Midnight

Hello all.

Was anyone else real surprised to hear that FFG only planned for four releases for the Midnight setting.

When I bought it I assumed we were going to get a fully fleshed out campaign setting.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad to hear that there is more produuct slated for 2004.

Is that the new trend? Release a campaign setting with one or two supplements, and then dump it and move on to the next CS?

This seems to have started with Wheel of Time.

It is very surprising. I just figured with the quality and effort put into Midnight that it was planned to be aroudn for a while.

In truth, to run a campaign setting all you need are a few supplements. Not every campaign setting should go the route of The Forgotten Realms.

Not surprised at all. As was said above, all you need is the main book. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Against the Shadow is a supplemental rules book and Minions of Shadow is Midnight specific monsters. Crown of Shadows is a good starting line for your campaign.

Not much need for anything else.....

Of course, thats not to say that I'm not drooling over the prospects of new Midnighty goodness!

The novel trilogy sounds very promising as well!

I wasn't surprised. I looked at their upcoming schedule, saw nothing more for Midnight, and assumed they were just doing the four. I was pleasantly surprised that they decided to put out more stuff, like the novels, though!

Eh, you're not alone. I was surprised as well, although I've known for awhile that they had at first planned just these four books.

While you only "need" the core book and sometimes a few supplements to run a campaign, I usually welcome more books.

While the campaign setting sounds interesting, I will definitely pass on the novels.

I have yet to find a single game-related novel that is worth the time to read.

OTOH, there are lots of other inspirational works out there, so all is good. :)

Supposedly the author is quite good, and Midnight is, in a way, divorced from the mechanics. PCs are so overpowered! So maybe they will be good.

My first thought, though, was how the books would flesh out a lot of locations and NPCs and events, which judging by the energy of the folks at againsttheshadow.org will probably be all typed up and posted before I'm done reading the book :)

Just as an aside about the WoT campaign: WotC only got permission for one CS and one Mega-Adventure. WotC couldn't make another supplement if they wanted to. Unless, of course, they renegotiated with Tor and/or Jordan.

That said, I wish they would at least do an update when (if?) the novels end. A lot has happened (not only plot, but serious stuff that would affect the game mechanics as presented) just in the three or four books since the default time of the CS (no spoilers here, though! ;) ).

I'm pretty sure that the deal for one CS and one adventure was all they wanted, though. I think they said something about that being about all that was profitable with licensed games.
