D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'll refer you to the table of contents for the AD&D 1E PHB:

I do think have having solutions to combat situations that aren’t always death are not necessarily a bad thing.

Death is a ‘full stop’ while resilient sphere, sleep, hold person, charm monster are a ‘…’
Then there should be built in mechanisms to ensure they don't either just auto-win the combat, or do nothing, making you feel like you wasted your turn. Witholding the "I win button" effect to later turns or making them do something smaller if they fail could be both good solutions.

Yeah exactly. See my suggestion for 3 alternative uses for legendary resistance.

@Minigiant you didn't specify the problem in question and I don't see merit i. Guessing. Back in 115 I wrote about how vancian prep &SR limited available spells and encourages players to proactively down shift spell choices to spells more likely to encourage teamwork than monster melting solo output just this morning. I think that had value far in excess of your not quite clear "more spell slots" potential problem
The problem was that NeoVancian spell was the only option and LR was the only popular counter.

Switching to Vancian spells only matters a bit if you till stick to Legendary Resistance on monsters.

I would love if Legendary Resistance, Spell Resistance, Ki rerolls, Maneuver checks, and high stats were options.

Failing that having a Legendary Actions that can break CC effects works decently.
Yup!

LU A5E has elite monsters (separate from legendary), they get "elite recovery" that lets them remove any one effect on them; it's either automatic at end of their turn, or as a bonus action that they can use even while CC'd.

TotV has Doom Points, basically lets them break through anything like a Force Cage (or it can do other stuff).
