Milestone reached, extra AP - now what??

Assuming that my players end up with more than one action point in their AP stock, what do we do with the extra AP?

If they extended rest, everything goes away.

As they continue, new battle rises - they can only use one of them.

Since they still haven't extended rested, that's another milestone isn't it? (Wording is a bit unclear - "two encounters without extended rest is a milestone" - they have done three now - do the two latest ones count as two without rest?)

If that's the case, they're back to 2 AP again. So now, even if they use an AP at each battle, they're perpetually (until rest) at more AP than they can use??

If this is the case, then I think at minimum there needs to be some out of combat AP uses derived...

For every two encounters they reach a milestone and gain an extended rest. So if they have two after the second fight, they will be able spend one in the 3rd fight and another in the 4th if it occurs.

If they complete an encounter 4 levels or more higher then they can earn two in a single fight

We found that at first we were conserving APs and often finding them unused at the end of the day. Now we try and use them in the first or second fight regardless

You get an action point, on average, every other encounter. If you hit a milestone and haven't used your first action point, you now have enough to use one in each of the next two encounters. Chances are, by then you hit another milestone and can use on in the next encounter, too. You would then be out of action points, though, and couldn't use one in the next encounter.

To say it another way, here's the above possible distribution of action points over 6 encounters in a day.

1: Start with 1, use 0, end with 1.
2: Start with 1, use 0, end with 2.
3: Start with 2, use 1, end with 1.
4: Start with 1, Use 1, end with 1.
5: Start with 1, Use 1, End with 0.
6: Start with 0, end with 1.

I guess that helps then.

Btw, where is the 2 for encounters +4 levels stated? I'd like to read the full text on that.

Thanks!

I like to not use my action point in the first combat, but then every combat from 2-4. We usually do not even make it to 5 encounters in a day.

Also, my group has a tendency to "merge" encounters. This may be due to me being too logical and having the guys in the next room hear the fireball and see what is up, or it may be due to them being doofuses and letting one person pursue a fleeing enemy into an unexplored area. In any case, with those sorts of shenanigans, single "encounters" often count as a milestone. I will even tell them when they "merge" the encounters: "This will count as a milestone", so that they know they'll have an action point waiting for them at the end. This encourages them to use one in the fight, and helps keep them alive. It hasn't come up yet, but I suppose, since it is really two planned encounters in one, I should really let them use two action points in the fight if they wished, shouldn't I?

To the OP, if your players feel they are wasting banked Action Points, have them buy, borrow, or enchant some Veteran's Armor and get back a daily instead!
