Mind-Altering Chemicals and D&D 3.5

Tock Chandler

First Post
I'm running an urban campaign where one of the characters plays a . . .distributer of semi-legal agents. I was wanting to incorporate this into my game, but wasn't sure how. Has there been a supplement, third-party or not, that talked about mind-altering chemicals? Hallucinogens, barbituates, stimulants . . .it could be interesting to use them in-game for various effects, even as splash weapons or something. Can anyone help me or do I have to, er, home-brew everything?

The Book of Vile Darkness has some rules about fantasy drugs and addictive substances.

Awesome, thanks! I'll check that out.

I see that there are some downloadable supplements here . . .designed for modern. Anybody use them? Think they're convertable?

This link (the first download there) has a few.

First download (the Cyberpunk d20 rtf) at this link has some rules for making drugs - don't know what they're like, haven't tried them. Obviously more modern-oriented, but d20 is d20, to some extent.

Some of the components/materials in the Herbalism section of Occult Lore do some pretty crazy things. . .

Also, Lords of Darkness (a 3e book for Forgotten Realms) apparently has some more drugs (than the BoVD.)

There are also some things in the Ptolus book, and I'm thinking that those things were also offered in some other form on Monte's website - possibly in the Technology PDF he created as a companion to the Chaositech book. I've used that in combination with the Book of Vile Darkness stuff, though I find that I have to seriously drop the prices in order to have them make sense to any but the super-super rich in any game world.

Wow, thanks. This is all very helpful.

The stuff for d20 Modern should be pretty easy to use with D&D. Most of the drugs I've seen use the poison save system just like D&D does, so it should be a snap to use.

It seems there's a PDF on drugs (so to speak) for d20 Modern, too: The Little Black Drug Book. Not familiar with it, but it might be alright. . . :uhoh:

I have it and it's very well done. It's one of the best products LPJ Design has ever released. My only criticism would be that it didn't include writeups for real world drugs, but I suppose that would be due to the restrictions in the d20 Trademark License. There's a couple of follow-up PDFs too:

d20 Modern Drug Wars Bundle

The bundle includes:

The Little Black Drug Book (d20 Modern rules for designing and using drugs)
Dope Fiends (Pusher and Candyman AdCs)
Modern Chemistry (fictional drugs for modern games based on design rules above)

My original RPGNow review can be found here: http://enworld.rpgnow.com/product_reviews_info.php?&reviews_id=6768&products_id=3766&it=1

How adaptable would you say it is to an urban fantasy setting?
