The Mind Blast ability of the Mind Flayer is listed as (Sp), but is it really ?

Is it a spell-like ability or a supernatural ?

Usually (Sp) abilities duplicate a known spell and is accompanied by a caster level. There is no Mind Blast spell.

Well, it replicates a psionic power, which is essentially the same as a spell.

Right; in the absence of using the psionic rules, the default "treatment" for psionics in D&D is "psionics work just like magic." Thus, a psionic ability would fundamentally be a magical ability.

There are other differences, though. Spell-like abilities can be enhanced with Meta-SLA feats, for example, while Supernatural abilities can't.

There are several other spell-like abilities that don't replicate a spell. The paladin's lay on hands and summon mount, for example.

Summon Mount is, effectively, a variation on the 1st level wiz/sorc spell MOUNT...
