They are a very proud and haughty race. Why should they stoop to such measures as a Ring of Sustenance? Doing so would simply be beneath them. It would show that they are not really the top of the top, that they are not intelligent and powerful enough to take what they need from the lesser races.

Maybe the society does use them, but it is looked down upon as a deformity or taboo in some way. Having one secretly so as to minimize the effects of starvation might be ok, but if the Illithiad was found out they might be shunned or killed for showing such weakness.

Based on your username, I'd think you'd support Illithids sticking to Rings of Sustenance and letting the slaves do their work in peace.

Though wine may be a better analogy for Mind Flayer brains; one glass every night with dinner for the wine drinker becomes one brain a day for the Flayer.
