Miniatures Info Requested Please

I just have a question on the DnD Miniatures. In general are they there own game or is it a 3d image of all the critters and PC characters. I am not looking for a new game to play but having a figure to look at is something that is making me think about getting some, and a battle mat. Thanks in advance.

Both. They come with their own rules for their own game (which is basically D&D lite), but they are also 3-D representations of creatures and people from the MM. If you go to the wizards.com you can find pictures of alot of them.

While they seem to be designed as their own game, and most info about them certainly leans that direction, I used them in my session on Saturday and they worked just fine. Even better, the stat cards have the D&D AND skirmish game stats on 'em.

If you're not interested in the rules for the skirmish game, you might consider picking up the "booster" packs rather than a starter pack, though the starter pack does come with some terrain cards, spell templates, a fold-out battle map and a d20.

It's a combination of both. The D&D Miniatures line is meant to be playable as a stand-alone game and as minis to use with your RPG sessions. Note that there are only 80 figures in this first set, so you certainly won't have minis to represent every monster you want or that suit your player's vision of their characters.
