I do something similar to the OP but I add a damage threshold. My players thought 'minions are dumb, I feel like I'm fighting the goblin children". So I came up with a middle ground that seems to work for us. YMMV as always.
I left minions alone and still use them mixed in with the new class which is Mook.
A mook has a power that reads: "Mook Resilence: When unbloodied, a mook dies on taking damage equal to or greater than 6+1/2 level, otherwise the mook is blooded. A bloodied mook that takes any damage is killed."
You can get 1" wooden disks online for cheap and even at the local craft store, (I use Hobby Lobby) you can get about 50 of them for $2. Use a red marker to color the edges and you have instant bloodied status. Another option is some cheap-o poker chips which you can generally pick up for under $10 for 300 chips at Walmart or your local mega-mart whatever it is that will almost always be 1/3 red chips.
