Minions are immune to non-targeted effect damage? Is this right???

When I saw the thread title my first thought was to open the thread and type in a reply along the lines of, "I think you're misinterpreting what it means when it says that a minion does not take damage on a miss. But contact CustServ: if they agree with your interpretation then you know you are wrong."

You can imagine how much I laughed when I realised you were already relying on a wrong answer from CustServ.

Hah, in all honesty if there hadn't of been a CustServ quote (albeit wrong), I wouldn't have even given that interpretation of the rules a moment's thought. It was only the CustServ quote that made me doubt and wonder if I had missed something. I should have known better.

Yes, but minions are generally far more likeable.

I once threw 80 2nd level minions against my 4th level party. They (the party) had a wonderful time, especially the wizard and his onoging aoe spells.

Ive done about the same thing. L1 minions skeletons, about 5 or so added per round, till the party got through the door.

It was great fun. A really good way to have a massive combat without it bogging down.

In all honesty... I haven't seen too many CustServ rulings that are correct. That's why my gut reaction on a questionable issue is to see if CustServ has issued a ruling and then take the opposite of that.

That may be due to people being more likely to post those particular CustServ rulings that are being contrary.
When they get it right, nobody notices.

They need to have a Council of Sages that go over each question instead of just one person who reads the question and replies with what he thinks instead of what is written. Or maybe have them cite the specific wording so they are forced to find the answers before replying.

One thing to be aware of, however, is some effects have themselves been errata'd so that they no longer interract with minions. Rod of Corruption, for example.

So, you sometimes have to look up the individual effect in the errata to be certain.

Where is is stated that a Rod of Corruption doesn't work on minions anymore? I've combed the errata and yet to find it.

He was incorrect; it's actually the Rod of Reaving that got (mildly) nerfed due to interaction with the Rod of Corruption.

IMHO it would have been fine to rule that the curse transference you get from the Rod of Corruption isn't the same as the curse placement you need to trigger the Rod of Reaving, but whatever. Their fix works too, even if it nerfs an item which didn't really need it, due to a combo they didn't foresee.

Cheers, -- N

EDIT: The nerf is on page 14 of the UpdateDec2009.pdf
