Minotaur characters

First Post
I'm working on a campaign where the only PC races are Human, Dwarven, and Taurian (No other humanoid races exist except the Drakkon, the Dragon Men). Taurians will basically be a Chaotic Good Minotaur race. The DMG set up for Minotaur characters indicates that an starting Minotaur character would be equivalent to 8th level. The campaign is going to start with 8th level characters, so this will work, but I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that is a bit high for Minotaurs. Does it use a formula later revealed in Savage Species? If 8 doesn't seem high to y'all, do you have some recommendations for toning them down so that a starting Taurian in my campaign could pick up one or two class levels?

I'd say Savage Species is perfect for what you're trying to do here. (If I'm reading correctly.) And, if I'm not mistaken, I think minotaur is the "freebie race" they gave away on wizards.com!

Go here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20030202ex

If you don't get the gist of what SS is all about, I'll sum it up:
"Monster characters" can start at 1st level in their race. Then they can only take that race until a certain level, which equals the Hit Dice of the MM entry for the creature (in this case, 8).

I think maybe you could lower the starting level of your camp, or maybe "tweak" the monster class so they get less...or cram more into fewer levels...

That should be enough for ya, methinks...have fun! :)

We just played an 18th level one off marathon game.

One of the players was a 10th level minotar barbarian who delt 137 points of damage in a single round. I would definatly not suggest making them lower level. If you really want to nerf them down to a non ECL class adjust their ability scores to bring their bonuses/minuses into line with the player races and take away some of their special abilities - or for each special abilty give them a drawback. Hmmm, maybe minotars are affraid of confined places.

Matthew,
I'd suggest backing them down two steps on the Savage Species chart. That will take away the immunity to Maze (which may not fit your world anyway), as well as a HD and some other goodies. Then your players will be able to at least add a few class levels.

I'd warn you about what has been mentioned in James Wyatt's campaign notes and other places - HD as a spell target. Let's say your PCs advance a bit and run into a half-fiend that casts Blashphemy on them. The monster-PC(s) have less hit dice than the other PCs and thus will be effected much harder. This may make the difference between being paralyzed for the entire combat or weakened for most of it. Other HD-based spells may have similar effects.
