Mirror Image/Barkskin

Legend
The game sports a few powers/abilities where you get additional AC because of ghostly images, that make you harder to hit because of the confusion which is the real you. When you're missed, an image is assumed to be destroyed and the AC bonus is lowered correspondingly.

Also, stuff like Barkskin Armor. Same idea, only when you get hit, the extra armor is "chipped away".

Now, how in the name of the gods do you explain that AC is lowered even when attacked by powers targeting Fort/Ref/Will?!?

I realize fluff shouldn't restrict play balance, but what's so over-powered with these effects anyway.

It seems to me adding "each time you hit/miss with an attack that's targeting AC, the AC bonus is lowered" isn't unbalanced in any way. And as an added bonus it makes much more sense too. :)

What do you say? If you've played a lot with these items, are there any hidden balancing pitfalls I'm not aware of here?

It's not hard to assume that ANY attack pops a mirror image, although logically it should probably give you bonuses to those other defenses as well.

maybe it breaks your subtle concentration on the spell thereby weakening it (yes, i know it's not a sustain, but whose to say it isn't in part being sustained subconciously or it's connected to your mental energies which get disrupted.... )...
yeah, weak explainations but it's better than nothing :)

Eh, a bunch of attacks, particularly martial ones, are still stabbing them in the chest though they aren't targeting AC.
Warlord's furious smash and Rogue's piercing strike, just as a couple of lowbie powers.

I understand the argument "don't bother applying logic to the crunch" thank you very much, Danceofmasks. What about answering the question? Do you think a general change to these kinds of powers ("if the bonus doesn't protect against an attack, it isn't reduced by said attack") would be balanced, or is there something I don't see? :)
