LOL. Point taken. But to be fair, Person of Interest had 103 40min episodes and 5-6 years to introduce and develop the AI as antagonist. Mission:Impossible - Dead Reckoning had 2hrs and 43min. It's not exactly a fair comparison.I'm cautiously optimistic, though I can't say I've warmed to the all-seeing AI as antagonist. Person of Interest did it better.
I think part of the issue is not showcasing how dangerous it is....its showcasing how dangerous its not.LOL. Point taken. The opening minutes of the film with the Entity basically tricking the crew of the Sevastopol into sinking itself in order to make it next to impossible to find its brain/core showcased exactly how dangerous that thing was.
I can see how having an antagonist that's something as nebulous as the Entity can be not as fulfilling as having a Solomon Lane or John Lark/August Walker. But I think that's why you have a character like Gabriel in play who is basically the physical manifestation of the Entity's will. But I digress
It already has a fatal weakness. It will have access to all the past episodes of the Mission Impossible TV series. Therefore it knows that the IMF is good at gaslighting its targets and making them think what they see is true, when it’s really just an illusion. Ergo, it has to conclude that any information it gathers by observing the IMF is false, and it should do the opposite of the action that appears logical. Thus it destroys itself with crippling self-doubt.I think part of the issue is not showcasing how dangerous it is....its showcasing how dangerous its not.
When you have an enemy that can track every move you make, has the resources of the entire world at their disposal, and is simply smarter than you.... I mean how do you beat that realistically? The answer is.....luck (or moreso plot armor) because you simply should lose. and in MI that doesn't feel satisfying.
Now if they had introduced some weakness in the AI, a blind spot, a weird glitch or some personality quirk....ok, thats a vulnerable point they could ultimately exploit and win and that feels satisfying. They likely will introduce such a thing in the 2nd movie, but chekov's gun doesn't work if you walk into the room with the gun and immediately fire it.
Thus it destroys itself with crippling self-doubt.
Hard to believe they have been making these since the 90's with Cruise.
Pretty crazy run.
