Mix and match pre-painted plastic

whokan

First Post
I'm thinking of buying some Star Wars and Axis & Allies TMG boosters to use with my DDM's to give me a wide enough arsenal to mix and match for a campaign that spans fantasy, modern & future/sci-fi.

I'm concerned that they will not scale well together. Having trouble determining if they can play side by side without looking goofy. This is totally for RPG purposes.

I also see some pieces from heroscape and mechwarrior that might be good to add.

Any thoughts or advice on 1) how they will look together? 2) TMG's that I've missed that would be good? 3) other?

p.s. I'm not a metal, paint your own kinda guy. Don't like the weight, don't have the patience or inclination.

cheers,
je

For compatibility with DDM:

Star Wars CMG: Same scale.
Heroscape: Compatible, but larger (32 mm scale)
Axis & Allies: Very different scale (15 mm vs. 30 mm)
Mage Knight: Compatible (MK is about he same scale, but scale is even more inconsistent than DDM). Dials take up a lot of space, but are easy to remove.
Heroclix: Same as Mage Knight
Horrorclix: Same as Mage Knight
Mechwarrior CMG: Very, very different scale (10 mm, roughly - same as model trains "N" scale)
Dreamblade: Larger than DDM (40 mm) but can be used for large/huge creatures. The biggest issue are the large bases that are very hard to remove (they are part of the miniature).

Here is a good thread from a Heroscape forum that compares a number of lines to Heroscape.

People keep saying this. It might be my limited experience, but I have never had any trouble removing Dreamblade figures from their bases. Part of the base is molded as part of the mini, and that smaller base is then attached to the larger, harder plastic base. I have just cut the mini away from the smaller base - and since it's pretty soft plastic, it just takes a little time and care. But again, maybe some of the minis are harder plastic - I've only done about 10-12.

I admit, I haven't tried to do so. However, I can pretty much just put a WizKids figure in the freezer for a short time and snap it directly off the clix-base. Only the figures with the most fragile of connection to the dial have ever had any issues at all.

(In fact, MK had an alternate version of another set called the "Painter's Edition" that were unpainted and not attached to the bases).

While the Mechwarrior minis are not to scale, some would make fine alternative minis for Warforged...esp. Warforged juggernaughts.

Ditto steamjack minis from Iron Kingdoms minigame, War Machine.

Some of the Dreamblade minis work just fine, if you don't mind their bases (or, as mentioned, you take the time to trim them).

You might also want to pick up some of the Halo Clix.

Much better are the golem figures from Mage Knight.

For example:

Yes, Mage Knight figures are very easy to remove from their bases. I generally just pop them off with a paring knife. The same knife I use to cut Dreamblade figures from their bases.
