MM3 Preview: MIMIC

That's pretty damn awesome.

It's also just one version of the mimic; presumably there are other versions that can't impersonate people.

It seems pretty obvious that there are three mimics. Spawns, object mimics and impersonator ones. They are lifestages of the same creature.

Considering the flavor of the mimic, I'm surprised its not a solo or elite creature. I've never heard mention of mimics working with other monsters.

That brings to mind an urban adventure I ran once... the pcs were dealing with an incredibly frustrating monster called an urban stalker with 1e-style psychic invisibility... they finally tracked it down to an abandoned house.

Within the house, a table turned out to be a mimic, a ragged coat turned out to be a cloaker and... hmmm... there was something else along those lines, but I can't recall off hand. It made for a very cool encounter with lots of unexpected!

I considered this when designing them, but decided their functions didn't overlap. Dopplegangers might deceive you for a number of complicated (often intrigue-based) reasons.

Mimics want to eat you.

Can you spill the beans on if you put in some lower level Mimics?

I want some low level PCs eaten by mimics too. :D

MM3 will also have jackalweres, who change into people, lure you over, and want to eat you.

Lots of shapeshifting carnivores.

In all fairness, they're both classic monsters (and so is the doppelganger, and the succubus, and...)

Granted that I've already converted both the mimic and the jackelwere, but so what? More varieties of monsters are better!

Oh sure. :)

The only problem is that regardless of multiple monsters that use the same trick, the players won't fall for it a second time. Or, if they do, they might get grumpy that they've "been there, done that, that wasn't so creative".
