The thugs beat Clint unconscious after he unsuccessfully tried to defend the couple and then threw him into the river to drown. This triggered something in Clint’s psychic or mayhap awoken some latent mutant gene; whatever the cause, Clint was changed. As he was dying he saw a mystical spider like being reach down and drag him out of the water and onto dry land. The spider being told him that he was saved for a purpose… that purpose was to become his avatar on Earth – Tarantula – his minion of justice.</blockquote>
