You did give ample warning for any sane person, However, the bait was too good for Super Hero PCs to not charge end over end screaming "Mine!" "No!" and "MINE!!!" right at it. The robot is going to destroy the city center: easy enough to evacuate. But what if the 'good' doctor then decided that he Relay wanted the heroes to appear? Lose of a base camp and city center is an acceptable lose in exchange for not losing life, but what if the Doctor decided to set the robot onto the full city until such time as the heroes appeared? then the fight is amid civilians who would not have time to get out of the way: because there are always those who decide to Not leave when told that the city is to be bombed. But lets assume that the doctor stays his hand and withdraws after? this says, to the world, that the heroes will back down if someone makes a large enough threat. This encorages future destruction and, very likely, death. This is thus not acceptable to a hero who thinks it through. Also, they are Player Characters: Player characters are predisposed to always take brutal, and generally violent, action. The players, Want to Play, obviously, and taking risks is what PCs are for, Super Hero PCs even more so. If the GM dangles, A "massive dragon threatens the country side!" you might be shocked at how many of your Players, vet or not, leap at the idea of fighting it even though they are just level 5 and that dragon is an epic crusher: as far as they see it, it will be a hard fight, but a doable one. after all, the DM would not simply go "rocks fall, Everyone (but the dragon!) Dies." because the PCs made one, all be it large, misstep, not in this day and age anyways. the assumption is A: it can be over came or B: it can be escaped, and, more then likely, key Intel will be gained. Even if it is really option C: it breaths fire, and everyone, but the rogue, makes their save, takes half damage on the breath, and still die eight times over with their nat 20s. The rogue failed his role (else he would see the start of turn 2!) What I'm saying is: Super hero PCs are bloody lemmings. if you make a room with a door and walls they can't brake or otherwise get out of, and set a recording of someone crying for help from within: you're getting at least 75% of the party as they ALL rush in, knowing that the bad guy dose this 90% of the time ahead of time. the 25% includes those who can get out before the door closes. You don't even need any further trap, even if they have full life support, they are trapped forever, unless something lets them out. oh wait, the bad guy has the only key. back onto the RP as of now though. my Assumptions: the Doctor is not only insane, but a prideful show off. The Doctor wants to show, in soul crushing detail, to the heroes, He is Their BETTER. To do this he made something that he Could simply, if barely, brute force into submission (battering down the robot), a mental task that he could best within the time frame(defusing the first bomb), A feat of dexterity/ingenuity (getting to the core bomb). He had already sent a previous challenge (will power) by way of the storm machine, and the fact that he is using None of that tech, at least on the heroes them selves shows that show boating is more impotent then simply winning to him. He has made the assumption that A: the heroes would keep the mech grounded, or B: they would have the robot fly as high as possible. in the first case another timer as almost all power is cut before the second bomb goes off, or simply cut almost all power and let gravity be the timer as a inertial fuse is set: if the robot stops, or slows, it goes off. Depending on the robot's terminal velocity, and how long it was going upwards: 5-7 rounds. said bomb is Likely simpler to defuse then beating the firewall, though easier is a relative term. (in my opinion this was made as something that could fully challenge him, as each stage is an escalation on the last) And in the, in his opinion, inevitable failor of the party, from the option of B, The Heroes fall from grace, and the sky, the robot, their tomb, crashes as the very earth quakes in Fear of the impact, and before anyone can even mouth the words "Did they survive?" He preemptively answers "No!" with a explosion who's kin has not been seen by mortal eyes save his own. Nothing less then crushing the will and very soul of all who would dare stand before him as a foe now and forever is acceptable to him. These are my assumptions, mind you. I closing, I'll ask again, should I make a post or should I wait for the next round to start since Felix has already acted this round?
