OGL Universal Fighter is an OGL resource devoted to expanding the abilities available to that most fundamental class, the fighter! Fighters have an honorable place as the first character played by many fantasy gamers. Experienced players move on to other character types with complex abilities, but the fighter remains as a favorite, “back to basics” option. On the other hand, OGL roleplaying doesn’t shy away from combat. Most adventures test characters with fang, claw and steel. The fighter retains a central role, because his trade is at the heart of fantasy gaming. That’s why there are so many interpretations of the class, from sly swashbucklers to driven manhunters. Universal Fighter is designed to support these perspectives by giving fighters a host of new options. You can use this book to customize almost any aspect of the character, including hit dice, armor, skills and abilities by level.
Choose a Core Profile to determine how tough, well-armored and skilled your fighter is. Move on to Fighter Abilities to choose from 24 class abilities. These include the standard selection of fighter bonus feats as well as abilities suited to expert archers, tough melee combatants and agile swordmasters.
Universal Fighter characters are compatible with standard OGL fighters. You can use the system in this 11-page supplement to recreate the core class if you like, and you can even decide to break away from the standard fighter partway through your character’s career. Your character isn’t a “variant” fighter. Instead, she’s a member of an incredibly broad class. You can change your character’s focus partway through her career, switching from a melee bruiser to a lithe knife thrower as your character evolves in play.
