[Modern] GM choosing PC's Occupations

What do you think of the idea of, after the PCs turn in their character backgrounds, the GM then chooses the appropriate occupation for the PC, based on what the PC wrote in their background. This way, players don't simply choose a nonsensical occupation simply because it offers the best benefits or "exactly what they want".

This is assuming, of course, that PCs all have backgrounds. Assuming they do, what do you think of this idea?

Well, I've never had problems of occupatiosn not fitting the concept and the background, including when I've played. I've always matched the background to the stats (the way I prefer to do things, makes it much easier). I guess it works best if the GM checks to see if the occupation and skills fits the background. (Here's an example fo it not fitting. iN one of my games, a character wanted to play a smart hero, but couldn't come up with a concept, so he just put down what skills he wanted, the occupation, and the background of a tabloid journalist. Thing is, the character didn't have any Craft:Writing, Forgery, or even Bluff. That's how not to do it, but we were ruched, and wanted to play, so we let him pass and have made fun of him ever sense).
