My first exposure to D&D was the classic PC game, Baldur's Gate, and its sequels. The game manual inspired my first attempts at running pen & paper games, though they were quickly replaced by the release and my subsequent purchase of the 3rd edition D&D rules. In the intervening 10 years, I've played through a number of d20 spin-offs and branched out to other 'modern' rulesets. But I've never really had the opportunity to play the rules that inspired the game that pulled me into the roleplaying world.
Not that I'm all that keen to try them. Flicking through AD&D 2e rulebooks has never really sold me on the game. Concepts like calculating THAC0 sound tedious. But I still want to explore something with the feel of AD&D - and ideally have the ability to run a Baldur's Gate themed game for a group of younger players who've never had the fortune of playing the PC game.
I know that many companies have released AD&D-inspired games but retooled to take advantage of modern gaming notions - like Hackmaster or Castles & Crusades. I haven't looked at any of these in much detail. Sell me on some! Extra points if I can put some of the AD&D 2e material I've got lying around to use with them with minimal conversion work (especially monster supplements or campaign settings).
