For those of us who'd like to talk about the Sweet20 XP rules, I've started a new thread for the purpose. I'd love to see what folks have to say.

If I want to play a combat game in which things aren't emotionally charged, I'll play Samurai Swords or the Baldur's Gate series. Either of those can include some role-playing. I don't play games like D&D unless I'm prepared to immerse myself in the world and the role of my character. What's the point of playing D&D if you don't give your character motivations, emotions, and goals?

 I like how some people think that since they play a certain way that it doesn't make sense for others to play a different way.

I've never been much of an immersion player. I RP, but I don't take it very seriously because that's not how I have fun. I enjoy the D&D mechanics and worlds and I'm more of a puzzle and tactics guy. Wargames doesn't do it for me since I find that many are too restricting, so I play RPG's. I hope that's alright with you. D&D is different things to different people.

You're absolutely right - there's no right or wrong way to play any role-playing games. I can very well relate to the "game mechanics and strategy" -style of playing although I'm almost totally into immersive and storytelling gaming style myself.

But what is quite important thing to remember is to try different styles every once in a while - it could be that anyone can find new things they thought to be boring and then find out that actually it's quite fun. Tastes change and different GMs and games can make things that didn't work do so.

I agree totally. I've tried playing with immersive groups, but didn't like it much. I had fun just playing, but the total immersion angle didn't sit well with me.

Yeah, I'm with you. Just a little too to LARP for my taste. I just want to go, have fun, kill a few things, roll some dice, laugh a bit (or a lot), and go home. :)

I don't think that RW has "total immersion" in mind. Even if he does, the type of game play he is describing doesn't have anything to do with immersion. You could play a game packed with emotion entirely in the third person.

edit: Er, not "doesn't have anything to do with immersion" but instead "doesn't necessarily have to be played in the total immersion stance."

Ah, I feel better now.

I'm not sure anyone had "immursion" in mind. Could be wrong though, never know.
