First Post
Psst. Hey, buddy, need a plot hook? In 1536 (or 1538, who are you asking?) Henry the 8th began the dissolution of monasteries in England.

Think about it- in your world the king decides to take down the monasteries and keep the money to himself!

Here is an overview- http://www.britainexpress.com/History/Dissolution_of_the_Monasteries.htm

And another- http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/timelines/britain/tud_dissolution.shtml

A litle more in depth- http://historymedren.about.com/library/prm/bldissa.htm

Some interesting additions- http://history.wisc.edu/sommerville/361/361-09.htm

what were the monasteries like?- http://www.britainexpress.com/History/medieval-monastery.htm

You may ask, "Clay, do you have a map?" YES!- http://www.britainexpress.com/History/medieval-monastery-map.htm

And a virtual tour- http://www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu/~dvess/ids/fa2/foun1.shtml

And, as usual, a letter, or eyewitness account- http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/h8-glastonbury.html

I think an entire world era could be built on just such- perhaps the druids join in with the mages and royalty after seeing the possibilities in a power vaccuum. All kinds of dark possibilities.

Or, just have one local favorite abby treated this way. :)

Have fun, game well.

I love this stuff. Thanks!

My favorite line: "The monks and nuns were treated quite well as a rule. Only a few who resisted were summarily executed."

Yeah, maybe the best line ever from a (m)HIYG thread.

Hey wombat. :) You going to GenCon?

I'm not much of a Con person, so won't be going this year, but truly we have to meet face to face sometime :)

Oh, and my brother-in-law owns a page out of one of the many choir-books ripped up in the post-Dissolution mania -- sad, really, but at least the page is preserved. Fantastic early musical notation.

Agreed. :)

Wow! Really?!? I would love to see that some time. Absolutely amazing.

My relic hope is a statue of Lenin, one of the ones torn down when Soviet Russia collapsed. I have no particular love for the man or the philosophy but I love the bronze stylings of those crazy commie sculptors. Great stuff.
