Whenever you create a new character sheet, one item always seems to get neglected – the character’s portrait. What does Xandros the Wise, budding human sorcerer actually look like? You probably spend a short amount of time telling the rest of your party about your hook nose and eager face, only to immediately involve yourself in adventuring and abruptly forget your own limited description. Now you can address this problem without hours of work drawing a portrait which will probably end up looking like the Elephant Man; let Mongoose do it for you! In this series of PDFs containing character portraits, we present more than 100 fantasy heroes, all races and all classes, plus a few novelty ones thrown in for good measure. In these PDFs you will find fighters and monks, clerics and magic users, even psions. What is more, each one has even been given a name so that if you are feeling uninspired you can leaf through and pick out a suitable name as well! This 26-page PDF also includes full and simple instructions that will have you cutting and pasting character art in no time. It really is that easy!

That's very generous of you, considering that folks could just buy the books and post the pics online...I wouldn't do that, but its possible and legal (assuming said poster follows the OGL properly).

Well, perhaps you would prefer it if we gave everything we commission away for free?

*Shrug* We can always make sure the next ones are not Open if there is little value in it for people. . .

Folks can buy any book containing OGC and post the content as long as they follow the OGL properly but you don't see it happening all over the place.

That's not what I said, nor what I meant

Neither did I say there was not value in it.

I said you were being generous, but pointed out a downside of it. I meant it as a compliment. It appears that you did not take it that way though.

FWIW, Matt, I think this is great! I love the idea of OGC art. :) As Paul pointed out, there IS something of a risk involved* - and I think highly of you for doing this! Consider a copy of each sold! And I'll definitely be looking to buy any more stuff along these lines released by you. :)

*I think it's less of a risk than many may think, though - most people who want "free stuff" will just distribute it illegally with no regard for the OGL... and most people who want to do things legally will be nice enough to respect those who publish under the OGL and not just try to turn around and "re-post" their stuff for free. Again, I point to "Freeport" and "Bastion Press" books as examples - while you CAN distribute the text of those over the Internet (they are 100% OGC) - nobody HAS done so. I think the whole worry of "if I designate it all as OGC, somebody can undercut me and give it away legally" is vastly overblown, given that there have been ample opportunities for it to happen - and it still hasn't happened. There is "piracy" occurring out there, to be sure - but the "piracy" problem is something wholly different - it is illegal distribution of materials - we're talking about legally undercutting someone by simply posting their OGC to the web here, and to my great pleasure, it hasn't happened yet... gives me great hope relative to the integrity of the RPG community.
