Mongoose Publishing is expanding yet again and we are in need of another full-time staff member.

We are currently looking for a full-time Editor to work on our licensed product lines, including the Judge Dredd and Slaine series of books. Such a person will be expected to take projects from original manuscript to final printing with a large degree of autonomy. The position is Swindon-based (in the United Kingdom) and has a potential salary of £14-20,000 per annum for the right candidate.

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

* Able to work fast in order to meet deadlines, while maintaining absolute accuracy.

* Experience in a writing, editing or proof-reading position

* Willing to work in Swindon, within an office.

* Intimate knowledge of the d20 System.

* A passion for games and gaming.

* Computer literate (Windows-based).

* Excellent skills in written English, time management and planning.

* Knowledge of our licensed properties would be a distinct bonus.

Past experience with publishing software and the laying out of books would be an advantage but not necessary, as full training will be provided.

Please note that this is an office-based position and enquiries into telecommuting will not be entertained.

For some people, this could seem like the ideal job – and indeed it may well be. However, candidates are cautioned that the position requires a great deal of hard work, dedication and commitment, as you will be responsible for a large part of Mongoose Publishing’s release schedule.

If, however, you believe you are just the person for this position, please drop me a line at msprange@mongoosepublishing.com, including a CV/resume and covering letter.

I'm not interested in the job, but I did want to say I really love the way you Brits talk! :D

Anyhow, cheers!

Edited for grammar. Not that I'm looking to become an editor...

Darn. I wish that a) I had any idea about how much that is roughly in US dollars and b) that I was in the UK. I attempted to stop by the Mongoose booth at Origins and speak with you, Mr. Sprange, but it seems my timing was always off. Nonetheless, I'm hoping to meet you at GenCon. I believe I left a card with you, so feel free to look at my web page for my CV. If nothing else, perhaps I can assist in a freelance capacity until you get a full-time editor in place.

Michelle, 14,000-20,000 BP is roughly equal to
US$21,600-US$30,900 .

Really?

Is that a typical salary for full time employees in the game industry? Would a game designer's salary be similar to the amounts that an editor would make? I'm not asking for specifics, just ballpark (ie 14k - 20k) figures.

Is the cost of living in the UK less than, equal to, or greater than the cost of living in the US?

I'm not interested in the job, but I'm very interested in the economics of the gaming industry. Thanks.

Hi there,

Overall, it is a pretty good salary for the gaming industry, though you may (that is, may) find better pay somewhere like Games Workshop or WotC. Experience, of course, has a great effect on pay, regardless of position.

Games Designers (we will be looking for two more later this year, incidentally!) could expect a similar salary, though it would likely be lower - at least, initially. Once again, experience has a great effect, and the best guys in the industry can expect 'professional' rates of pay.

It is often said that the cost of living is higher in the UK, though I am still not certain there is any huge difference overall - our fuel (gas) prices would scare the crap out of you though :)

At the end of the day, there is no 'set' rate of pay for any position in this industry and, the larger the company is, the more they can pay (natch). Of course, competition is higher too :) The common view is that if it is money you are after, then you are better off in other industries. And this is probably true. However, if you are good at your job, there is no reason why you cannot make a decent living in RPGs. You may never get rich, but you should be able to pay for your house, support your kids and get all those luxuries you hanker after (games tend to be cheap if you are in the industry :)).

YMMV.

Difrence between US and Europe

1) In europe the taxes are higher then in the US
2) Prices of Buildings, etc are heigher then in the US, but the quality of the materials of the structures are also better then in the US. (US uses lots of cheap building materials, in europe is stone more common, etc)
3) Some products will scare you if you see the prices in europe(gas, tabaco, alcohol, etc) but this are generaly the "luxery" products.
4) Medical and Educational expenses will be much lower in Europe then in US.
5) Wellfare stuff is better in europe then in the US.

In general (if you look at all things) Europe will be slightly more expensive then the US (you will have less money to spent in the end of the month), but you will have much better ensurances should something happen to you, or your kids, etc.

So Europe is the wrong place if you look for some "quick" and easy cash and short terms, if you look at the long term europe is much, much better.

kind regards,

Laiyna
