Mongoose - Hat's off (Chaos Magic)

Just wanted to send out a kudos to Mongoose for Chaos Magic. I picked it up this weekend, and I am very impressed. It has a ton of art, a great concept, is very well written, and I can't wait to dig deeper into the rules and make up a chaos mage.

Great stuff, guys. Keep up the good work.

I've given it to my most awkward player (you know the one... we've all got 'em!) with strict orders to 'Break the System!' - if anyone can do it, he's the guy. I'll let you know how it goes... I've given him one month trial as a Chaos Mage on condition that if it doesn't work out, he goes back to his old character, no arguments.

The Chaos Magic book is very well done. I think this is Mongoose's best product to date and I do have all of theirs. They are the only d20 Company I can say that for.

I just wish they would have addressed two additional points in their product. The first being Metamagic feats. With the use of a Metamagic feat the DC for successfully getting the spell off would just be higher. Or there could be some cool Chaos Meta Magic feats that could have a chance to do as they are supposed to. For instance Choas Sound (the chaos version of Silence Spell) would have a percentage chance of being totally silent, or a whisper, or normal, or a shout, or deafening. One could apply the caster level to the roll so the caster has a little control over the outcome (adding or subtracting as the player deems neccisary). The other was Bard Chaos Magic. Bards are, IMO, the class that would be chaotic on the whole. Chaos magic combined with their music would be awsome. It could replace both the Bardic Music and their spells. The Chaos magic as it is presented is a bit powerful for a Bard.

Errors in examples?

I got the Chaos Magic book last week and like the system. My only gripe is that there were only two examples of creating a spell and both appeared to have errors in, unless I'm missing something?

The DC for a minor movement effect is 15, but the first example uses a minor movement effect and only quotes DC10 for it, while the second example also uses a minor movement effect and only quotes DC5 for it.

Does anybody know any sites where people have posted cool spells created using these rules?

Thanks

Luke

Chaos Magic was very inspiring, probably the best of the Encyclopedia Arcane series. (Which means that they keep getting better, as I liked Necromancy more than Demonology...)

It will probably find its way into my campaign as a rare, mostly lost form of 'elder sorcery', the reason why wizards like their spells to be codified, strictured...and safe.

Morrus, please let us know how that turns out. thanks!

*Bump*

Hoping to get someone from Mongoose to give us some errata on this.

Here's the skinny:

The examples in the book are wrong, the cost is 15, not 5. There were some changes made in response to playtester feedback that resulted in a change to the cost but I missed it on the examples.

That said, I am currently working on a web enhancement for Chaos Magic that will provide some explanation, a few corrections, and a few surprises.

No, I do not have a date when this is going to be available, but it will be available and it will be cool. Best of all, it'll be free. :)

Free web enhancement? Great, that's good news!

Please, include as many examples as possible, and if you can, some examples of how 'duplicating' the most popular static magic spells using Chaos Magic. For example, how would you describe (and what DC) a chaos magic version of Magic Armor...

I'm getting to point of adding this to my game and I was wondering how the experiment went.
