Well, true. It may well be that my smaller, lower priced paperbacks fare better next to a full-color glossy hardback than another hardback, at the same price, with crappier production values, would fare.

In other words, I think you are ok if you release to thematically similar product, but not necessarily ok if you are also competing in the same price and format.

Hi ya-

I liked MGP's Encyclopaedia Arcane series, the Constructs issue is very good. I also enjoyed Ultimate NPC's a very handy product to have around when your DM'ing and need a quick name or an NPC of some power. Judge Dredd Also gets another positive vote from me, I enjoyed reading that book alot. The slayer and Quint series never was my cup of tea.

I have yet to buy a Mongoose product (although I go back and forth on picking up "Stonebridge" regularly), but the Complete Campaigns series is going to do it this spring. Hopefully the impression will be a good one.

No it doesn't. It requires a three month or so lead time for solicitations to distributors. Items are often announced before then.

We used to use the three month cycle you suggest but once you reach a certain size, it just is not practical any more and things lengthen to four or even six months.

Well, I was also talking of perceptions and appearences...but you conviently cut that part of my post out of the quote. Since you're just addressing the points that make you look good, I see no need to continue this discussion.

And others have already said what I needed to say, in any case.

Oh, about Mongoose:

There's some great products in their lineup. Up to now Conan's been too high-priced for me to pick up, and the Quint and Slayer's guides weren't my thing, but I don't have any special perception of them one way or another.

But put it this way: The fact that a book is from Privateer Press is enough to make me pick it up and look it over. Likewise Green Ronin or BadAxe. A book from Mongoose, on the other hand, has to appeal to me for some particular reason (setting/genre I'm into, cool cover etc) before I'll pick it up.

Which puts them in exactly the same category as WotC, so Matt, I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings any. Honestly, it's because you guys put out so much stuff -- but keep it up. I hope you're doing well.

I've bashed Mongoose rather hard in this thread and a few others. I want to make it perfectly clear that it's been at least three years since I've looked at a Mongoose product at all. The items I've looked at were simply bad, and that is clearly a matter of opinion. I's quite possible that their production values and content have changed since then and I want to at least give a nod to that possibility. I was so turned off my my initial impressions, and there is so much other D20 (and other games) that I know I enjoy I don't bother with Mongoose labelled products.

I do have a retraction to make however. One of my closest friends puchased the Paranoia book a month ago, and gave it a good review yesterday during a phone conversation with me. So it's no longer accurate to say that none of my players have purchased a Mongoose product.
