Hi guys,
The Slayer's Guide to Medusas has just been plopped on to my desk, and it looks a stunning piece of work. The front cover has been done by Mongoose veteran Anthea Dilly, though this is her first crack at a cover artwork - you will seen many of her interior illustrations from the Slayer's Guide to Centaurs and onwards, and most of the colour artwork on the inside covers of our more recent books are also hers. Backing up the cover is an anatomy picture by Chris Quilliams, who has somehow managed to surpass himself!
Written by staff writer Ian Sturrock, Medusas are a deceptive and horrific predator, and are showcased in the full Slayer's Guide treatment. The Physiology chapter goes into their full life and breeding cycle, offering many hints and tips as to exactly why Medusas do what they do.
Also covererd are rules for Medusas whlo disguise themselves to travel through human society, a look at their religion and ponderings on the existence of Medusa clerics, druids and monks. This race is an extremely potent foe whose main attacks can send even the toughest fighter running in fear - the Methods of Warfare chapter gives Games Masters in depth hints and tips on how make the most magically laden party quake, while giving rules and ideas for Medusas who prefer to grapple their foes, and some ideas on how reflecting gaze attacks may work.
For Games Masters wishing to experiment, two Medusa only prestige classes are fully detailed. The Guiser is able to move through the societies of other races with ease, luring their prey to doom, while being capable of modifying the effects of their gaze attack. The Serpentine follows the Way of Serpents, gaining such features as the Serpent's Embrace, Companions, Wyrm Scales and Forked Tongue. Six Medusa only feats will serve to fully flesh out any Medusa encounter and guarantee that your players will never forget their battle against this race.
Scenario Hooks and Ideas leads straight into Sfiney's Gang, one of the largest lairs ever portrayed in a Slayer's Guide. I won't give too much away about this one evening's worth of encounters, but Sfiney herself is matched in power only by the example Half-Fiend Medusa detailed in the Reference List at the end of this book!
The Slayer's Guide to Medusas is a worthy addition to the series and, indeed, was the first work Ian Sturrock ever did for us. It is being shipped today, but we will have (very) few advance copies at GenCon, so give us a shout if you are there!
