The latest volume of the Supplementary Rulebook series, Ultimate Character Concepts, is now in your local games stores.
With the end of the original Quintessential series, we felt it was time to compile, re-jig and add new Character Concepts into one complete volume, giving your characters the chance to be truly unique right from 1st level, without becoming reliant on prestige classes.
A character concept is basically a template applied to a character during creation that provides a small number of benefits and penalties to the standard class, as well as provide roleplaying tips and strategies to get you into playing it from the word go.
For example, one of the templates in Ultimate Character Concepts is the Sea Mage, designed for wizards (though full rules are provided to adapt it to clerics and sorcerers), a practitioner who specialises in the control of elemental water. Who gains a small number of bonus spells to add to his spellbook each level (such as create water, fog cloud, and control weather), and gains a +1 bonus to his caster level when using these spells. In return, he loses his free Scribe Scroll feat and Craft (alchemy) and Knowledge (arcana) as class skills. As a player, you are also told that sea mages tend to be patient and relentless, with long memories and the ability to take on quests that may take years to complete.
In a nutshell, that is it - and there are hundreds of these character concepts within this volume, giving you plenty of scope to try new and interesting characters.
Instead of simply compiling all the character concepts from the original Quintessential books, this volume has been updated to 3.5, new rules added to allow many concepts to be taken by several classes and further playtesting undertaken to ensure all concepts are now balanced with one another. In addition to this, full guidelines are also provided so players can begin creating their own character concepts to fulfil a specific idea they have for a new character.
