Mongooses Armageddon 2089?

Is it any good? I can't find a thorough review of it, and the only things people are telling me is that it's a "Mechwarrior ripoff. Better if you go straight to the source with the Clans and Star League, man."

A friend of mine just picked it up and he really enjoys it. The selfish bastard hasn't let me look at it yet, though, so I can't tell you what I think of it.

He's a Mechwarrior fan and he says that it is different enough in it's own right to enjoy it.

I think it is pretty gret. The book is beautiful, and most of the art is as well.

The rules look clean and flexible - and as realistic as a mech game can be.

I would say to check it out for yourself.

It is not as far future as Battletech, so comparing the two is really not applicable. It is like comparing apples and oranges. the only thing they have in common is that they are fruit (mechs).

I would have to say that the setting is more battletech in feel, and NOT anime in feel.

my 2 cents.

Razuur,

In general I disagree with the not far enough in the future point.. Battletech was never really 'far' future tech.. sure it had jumpgates, dropships, etc. Those would be a natural extension of 2089 eventually.. but overall I find the setting very Battletech like.. the WarMeks are also very battletech like.. which I believe was the intent of Mongoose.

The fuedal lords are replaced by feuding corporations and national powers.. mercs are a huge factor, as in battletech, the only thing I think it lacks is the strong personalities BT had at the beginning.

My only issue with Armageddon 2089 is the layout.. the background makes it very hard to read the body text, and the charts are also bad.. white and green text on a black background.. ouch.. eyes still hurt reading them.

Overall I love the setting and the rules seem solid (Have not playtested them yet).

Worth looking over for anyone who enjoys BT.

BTech was far future, but the history prevented it from being Far Future tech, it was a series of Ruling Houses in decline since the Star League fell, as a result of that much of the technology was lost. Many years were spent refiniding and rediscovering techniques they had had centuries ago but lost... until the Clans returned from beyond the inner sphere at which point they began to regain much of the former technological glory that was around during the Star LEague.

Armageddon has a similar feel, but where constant warring and conflict has prevented the time and effort to be put in in developing much beyond weapons of war and even then its limited in the leaps and bounds its made. No doubt because the various governments dont have a great deal of funds left after rebuilding, rearming, paying wages, replacing lost meks and equipment etc... R&D certainly exists but is probably not as commonplace as it once was.

Oh BTech never had Jumpgates. The Zenith and Nadir points in space were merely the ideal places from which Jump ships could traverse inter system, they weren't actually gateways artifical or otherwise. the Clans in particular had a knack for using jump drives to deliver them close to a planet making Zenith and Nadir points pretty much defunct.

regardless of this like you say these 2 games have a similar feel, and a plausibility to thier ambience that makes them seem a like. the other similarity between the two is that they both work well as systems.

Arm 2089 I like. I'm not a mecha fan or have much expereince outside aof a robotech game many years back. But I like the history and the feel in the game. I really wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.
