Mongoose's New IP: Traveller is BACK

Hmmm, not all that fond of the original Traveller system. While I liked the setting best in classic Traveller I liked the system in Traveller: The New Era best. I actually thought that GURPS and Traveller fit well together as well - a better system than that of the original, but much the same feel.

T4, T5, and T20 I skipped.

I'm a CT/MT hybrid kinda guy, and will probably continue to be even after T5 hits the streets. I also don't really care about the announced settings. I still think this is a really cool announcement for two reasons:

1) It probably means a bit of noise around Traveller, which will attract some new blood and make it easier to get a game going. This is a Good Thing.

2) The new licensing, if done properly, will allow a PDF industry driven by third-party publishers to grow up around Traveller. I'm looking forward to seeing how that develops.

I speak as an avid collector of White Dwarf from issues 1-60 or thereabouts. Although people forget now, I loved the way that the name reflected both sci-fi and fantasy nicely.

Exactly. Although it may sound like blasphemy to say it, White Dwarf (pre-house organ) was superior to Dragon magazine. It had more heart, many more wild and wonderful ideas, and was not afraid to be cutting edge. Most of the Fiend Folio (1st edition) monsters arose from that same UK spirit of fantasy and sci-fi fun, and that's probably why it's my favorite AD&D monster book.

Wait. I need clarification.

1. Mongoose is publishing a Traveller RPG, using their Runequest rules. They're also put those rules under the OGL.

2. Far Future is publishing a Traveller5 RPG, which is based on Mongoose's Traveller RPG, which is based on the Runequest rulesystem.

3. QuikLink/RPGRealms still holds the license to publish Traveller d20, with no release date on a new edition or revision.

Do I have that right, so far? Did I missed or overlooked other details?

No, Mongoose is publishing a Traveller RPG using a modified Classic Traveller rules set, which will be made available under the OGL.

Save for the Runequest portion, this is essentially correct. T5 will be Marc Miller's current system, and will be considered the advanced form of the basic rules set that Mongoose is publishing, which is based on a modified Classic Traveller rules set. The Basic system will be OGL, but I don't know if T5 will be considered OGL.

No Runequest rules will be used or harmed in the process of developing the new OGL Basic Traveller rules.

Within the next six months, there should be an update to T20 in the form of a Player's Guide. QLI holds their T20 license for three more years before it lapses.

This does not cover details such as:

1) Will third party developers be able to create work for the Official Traveller Universe under either the new OGL rules set or the Traveller Logo License?
2) How will this impact FFE's Fair Use policy, which currently allows free fanzines such as Stellar Reaches?
3) Will the OGL content (the Traveller SRD, as it were) just include Book 1? Books 1-3? Or Books 1-8?
4) What task system will the Basic Traveller utilize, a 2d6 version based on CT or a variant on the T4/T5 escalating dice variant?

There are more questions, but these are the ones that are important to me at the moment.

With Regards,
Flynn

...and this, my friends, in one hell of a generous move on the part of Mongoose. They clearly support open gaming, and many thanks are in order to them!

Pretty much what I'm wondering... especially the task and the Fair Use policy...

If all else fails, hopefully it's backwards compatable with CT... all this material can't go to waste! ;)

This is something I'm excited about. For all of my "Space Opera Support" products I've released via Polgarus Games, I've always had Traveller in the back of my mind while writing them. It would be nice to be able to do "real" Traveller material.

Cheers,
Jason
