Mongoose's new RPG License - speculation?

Starcraft RPG would be a nice option.
I don't think that's what they are talking about, but since Mongoose has so many crappy games and is still loooking for more, Starcraft RPG could be one of their best selling products.

Well, supposedly they are announcing new books for Starship Troopers soon (nothing new there for a loooong time) - I'm not sure it would make sense to announce new SST and HALO at the same time. It's probably Call of Duty -- to go with their battlefield evo minis. ;)

I doubt it will be related to Cthulhu as that wouldn't require a license. . .

People keep saying this, though it's worth pointing out that Trail of Cthulhu (the GUMSHOE CoC-ish endeavor) did require a license. . . and I'm pretty certain that anything similar to CoC would require such a license to avoid an infringement lawsuit (Cthulhutech, of course, isn't remotely similar to CoC, so I doubt that this was an issue).

I don't know what the actual status is on the copyright issues. What I suspect is that certain Cthulhu bits are public domain, others aren't. You could craft a game using public domain elements, but you better be careful about referencing those that aren't. It's probably simpler to just arrange for the license.

Anyone have any reference to the "Cthulhu is public domain" comments?

Edit: Checking wikipedia I see that everything prior to 1923 is public domain. After that there is confusion, but much of it is probably public domain. Chaosium owns trademarks to certain phrases (such as "Call of Cthulhu").
