It shouldn't be difficult to choose spells which enhance physical combat and prowess so that just a Fighter/Sorcerer (or Fighter/Wizard) would also seem quite monkish. Probably he is going to wear light or no armor to keep ASF low, for example, and therefore rely more on mobile melee combat rather than "tank". The mystical side of the monk class can be relegated to RP aspects.
OTOH, you may want to check how the Psion class works nowadays - which I don't really know - for it incorporates something equivalent to spellcasting with a meditation or power-of-the-mind flavor.
