D&D 5E Monk

Tapkill

First Post
Ok I bet there is has been ALOT of threads based on trying to multiclass monks but I want to add another :). I have a Drunken Master Monk lvl 5 at the moment and I want to get to 7 for the Evasion before moving on but cant figure out what to move to. I was thinking rogue for the sneak attack, druid for the wildshaping, or a spellcasting class for well spells.

STR: 10
DEX: 16
CON: 12
INT: 10
WIS: 16
CHA: 13

Any insight would be great even if its completly different then what i was going for

Not sure how well sneak attack or wildshape works with a drunken master. If you are looking for optimization, I cannot help much, as I am not an optimiser.

For concept? Barbarian maybe, to represent the fortitude you get from Alchohol, and the Tavern Brawler feat, if you are playing with feats. That would basically make you Jackie Chan, allowing you to fight with proficiency using Chopsticks, bowls, cups, and pretty much anything else.

Multiclass Rogue works quite well; plenty of Rogue abilities work fine with the Monk class. Sneak attack using the Short Sword, Cunning Action saves you some Ki points and more options for your bonus action is always good.

Note that the Druid wildshape does combo with abilities granted by by race and class, although it does take interpretation from the DM. Do you still have Ki points while wildshaped? Ki is a mental ability so it still should have; unarmed strike should also still work as lots of Beasts have legs that could be used with this.

A Jackie Chan type with Tavern Brawler is also nice; grab a barstool and use it for combat quite effectively; anything being turned into a weapon is a cool feature anyway and definitely fits a Drunken Master.

Another consideration is the ASI, since it is tied to class level, not to character level.

Seven levels of monk nets only the one ASI at 4th level.

Adding 12 levels of rogue would give you ASI options at rogue levels 4, 8, 10, and 12, for the typical 5 ASI that most classes end with at level 20.

Questions to consider then:

1) Take an 8th level in monk for a total of 6 ASI? This would be the best option if you want to take a feat or two.

2) Taking only 10 levels in rogue allows you to pick up the 2 levels in druid to needed to gain wildshape. Take that 8th level in monk, and you'd still have 5 ASI overall.

This does look like it you've got a fun PC, any way you go ahead with it.

Both Lanliss and Marcelvdpol mentioned Jackie Chan. Now I'm having a hard time not thinking about a wildshaped, drunken J-Chan character - that's a movie I'd sure as hell pay to see!

A Wildshaped Giant Octopus with Unarmed Strike and Flurry of Blows. Look at how that Octopus takes full advantage of having 8 appendages!

Had to look it up ... but, yup, giant octopus, CR 1. There it is. Takes 8 levels of druid to get there, so I'm going to have to recalibrate my ASI/class suggestions. LOL

Even better: I was playing in a 4e adventure when the DM decided to introduce us to the decapus - a ten-tentacled arboreal beast.

Liked dropping on targets from above.

Good news? DM said it's natural prey was giant spiders. [Looked it up; he lied.]

Bad news? It had an astigmatism and thought we each had 8 limbs.
