Monkey Grip

From a balance point of view, would it be unbalancing to allow someone with Monkey Grip to use a weapon two sizes larger in two hands?

I realize regular Monkey Grip disallows this, but I am considering it. I realize this could be pretty bad in the hands of a human (with a huge greatsword) but the player asking is a halfling who just wants to use a greatsword.

Well, I don't necessarily think it would be game-breaking, but that image is a little to silly for my taste. ;) Isn't a greatsword nearly twice as long as a halfling is tall?

There's a feat in the Netbook of Feats called "Gigantic Weapon" that does exactly that.

I have a cleric with an Intelligent Huge Greataxe he stole off a Frost Giant wizard. Damned thing never shuts up.

A huge greatsword only does 2d8 damage, so from that point it seems okay.

However, I must agree with that guy from Texas above on the absurdity of the look.

Unless it is Anime. :p

Seriously, the feat only allow a two-handed weapon (by D&D game definition) to be wielded one-handed, with penalty. It doesn't say about wielding a weapon two size larger than the user with two hands.

Everyone thinks it is a logical progression.

Either that, or use the Gigantic Weapon feat from the Netbook of Feats as has been mentioned. It specifically allows with proper training the use of a weapon two sizes larger than the creature as long as it is wielded two handed.

Combine that with two-handed power strike from Quintessential Fighter that allows you to increase your damage with heavy two handed weapons and you are getting somewhere..

Combine the above with the Heavy weapon rules in Magic of Faerun and make you an extremely dense 80 pound great sword and go deliver a pounding.

If you get a 26 strength (after raging) barbarian using this combination, he'll be swinging 4d6+16 damage per hit. Or 20-40 damage per hit, no save.

Erg, of course it doesn't have a save, it just felt necessary to say that after putting so many numbers next to a melee swing that is easily repeatable all day long----provided you don't mind looking like a linebacker on steroids after swinging around an 80 pound sword for more than 5 rounds. :)

This is of course to either a) excite you to the possibilities of high fantasy extra ordinary heroic gaming, or b) warn you away from the consequences of such feats for the more grim and gritty, low-power gamers.

Flexing the ol' Smack Muscles, eh Jeremy? :)

I have No problem with this. I know a friend who's going for Dragon Discipline going for this. Large and Incharge, as well as this feat, to get a Gargantuan Sword. :)

I could see a Minotaur wielding a gargantuan chain, for example. Heavy as heck, but you don't want him to swing that at you!
