Pathfinder 1E Monster Advancement Advice

Hi guys

Looking to advance a monster as a Kobold to CR7 with a change to Large.
Based on : http://paizo.com/prd/monsters/monsterAdvancement.html and http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/humanoids/kobold I wanted to go through the steps and see if I understood them well

(NOTE : If the suggestion is an either/or, i pick the higher.. so 2-3, i go 3)

Step : 1 - Plan the Monster
This is going to be a simple one, exactly the same abilities and attacks, just CR7 (+6 CR) and going from Small to Large

Step : 2 - Add Hit Die
Going from CR1 to CR7 gives me the following :
  • HP : 60 = 5+10+10+15+15 [+5 (existing)]
  • AC : 23 = 2+1+2+1+1+1 [+15 (existing)]
  • ATK : 13 = 2+2+2+2+2+2 [+1 (existing)]
  • DMG : 1d6+23 = 3+3+3+4+5+5 [+1d6-1 (existing)]

Step : 2a - Change Size
Going from Small to Large
  • STR : +12 = +4 (small > medium) +8 (medium > large)
  • DEX : -4 = -2 (small > medium) -2 (medium > large)
  • CON : +6 = +2 (small > medium) +4 (medium > large)
  • Natural Armor : +2 = +0 (small > medium) +2 (medium > large)
  • AC/ATK : -1

Step : 3 - Ability Scores & Changes

First Saves, this isnt covered in the Advancement Page given so I looked it up and this creature I believe gets poor saves, so really its +1 each CR
Fort +2, Ref +1, Will –1 becomes Fort +8, Ref +7, Will +5

For Abilities, the Up is going into +1 to CON
STR : was 9 now 21 with a +12 change in modifier
DEX : was 13 now 9 with a -4 change in modifier
CON : was 10 now 17 with a +6 change in modifier
INT : was 10 now 10 with no change in modifier
WIS : was 9 now 9 with no change in modifier
CHA : was 8 now 8 with no change in modifier

+12 STR gives a +6 to ATK & DMG
-4 DEX gives a -2 to AC (which is balanced out by the Natural AC)
+6 CON gives a +3hp per CR (+21)

Final stats as far as I can tell are :

  • HP : 81
  • AC : 22
  • ATK : 18
  • DMG : 1d6+28

Furthermore with a BAB of 13, he gets +13/+8/+3
This attack sequence is modified to +18/+13/+8

---- So this looks quite stable

Now to compare vs a Hill Giant (Club wielding CR7 Large Creature)

  • HP : 85
  • AC : 22
  • Saves : Fort +11, Ref +2, Will +3
  • ATK : +14/+9
  • DMG : 2d8+10

So my HP and AC are about there
Saves look a bit out by expected that was a problem since I didnt have that included in the steps given by the webpage

ATK looks a bit off, I seem to have given my guy +4 extra attack and as a result an extra attack swing
DMG is WAAAAY off, with the above, my guy is doing 32 average vs 18

So I am sure I have made mistakes but can't figure them out..

My other option is to create a monster from scratch using http://paizo.com/PRD/monsters/monsterCreation.html

Thanks for any help

you could always apply the giant template as you did (or did you simply use the size increase chart?)

instead of changing HD, add warrior class levels.

you want a CR 7 Large Kobold? ... add 2 giant size templates and 6 levels of warrior. Seems easier than using the format presented in the PF Bestiary.

expert, warrior, and sometimes adept make easy upgrades to existing monsters ... even the non-humanoid ones. An Adept 8 Winter Wolf just seems like an interesting adversary.
