Monster Ecologies due in April

Awwww, May? April was going to be a really cool month for stuff for me. Guess it still will be, just a little less so for now. Which actually might be better for my wallet, come to think of it...

Just from the past 3 years? That's a shame - the Ecology articles were really, really great years-n-years ago. Not that they're bad now, mind you - I just have a nostalgic spot in my heart for the Ecologies from when I started buying Dragon in the 80's...

We could have easily done a complete issue collecting Johnathan's "Monster Hunter" articles, or even Ed Greenwood's old ecologies, but we knew we only had 128 pages and we knew we had to put together something that was compatible to the current edition and that had a similar stylistic tone. Who knows? If this one does really well we certainly wouldn't be against another one with a more "classic" approach.

that would be pretty cool, too. :) *most* Ecology Of articles aren't strongly grounded in any rules-set, so shouldn't be overly taxing to do any conversion work... (this, he says, without any fact-checking)

If I can find it on Amazon. I dont pay full price for books anymore.
I still cant find the Dragon Compendium on Amazon so I have yet to pick it up. I doubt it's really worth the 40 bucks cover price in stores?

Erik, that's an interesting strategy. Why the more recent articles? Wouldn't the older articles be more likely to sell? My theory is that many of the older articles aren't owned or are "out of date" and would sell more. Does reprinting recent stuff really sell that well?

And, why did WotC let you do this, but not another compendium?

Or, you can choose door C, but I don't have a third question right now.

I think WotC didn't have to sign off on this because it's a magazine. Yes, it's a magazine of reprints, but if you look at the format, they're very careful not to make it a paperback book, which likely is governed by a different part of their legal agreement with Wizards of the Coast.

If you're like me, and not a subscriber to the modern Dragon, it's very worth it. It mixes a few great stat-free classics (The 7 Sentence NPC, for instance) with a lot of good modern crunch. It's one of the best D&D books I own.
