D&D 5E Monster Knowledge Checks

Do you allow players to roll knowledge checks to learn information about monsters? I know this has been the case in previous editions but the skill descriptions are fairly short and vague on the subject. I'm trying to decide if its a good or bad idea to do it myself. On the one hand it's nice to learn things as you go, on the other it can be frustrating coming up against something and failing to defeat it or making the encounter more difficult than it could be. Then there's metagaming. I constantly struggle with what I know as a player and what I can use in game through my character and despite trying to avoid metagaming, I'm probably still guilty of it at times.

So how do you handle monster knowledge checks in 5e?
