Anyone have a hard and fast rule for assigning skills to a monster?

I am looking through rules and cant seem to find it

Do you just assign it>?

Most monsters don't have skills listed. If you (as DM) want a monster to be trained in a skill, you just give them training in that skill.

Decide what they're good at. Give it a value 5-8 higher than untrained skill checks. Or just give it whatever you want.

That's pretty much it.

The monsters level adjusted ability modifiers are listed, if you want them to trained in that skill add 5 to the appropriate ability mod. If you want them to be really good a a skill make it +8 to include a skill focus type effect.
If you really want make it +10!

XP is based entirely on monster level, as per the XP reward charts in the DMG.
