Paul Hughes, the lead designer on Monstrous Menagerie 2: Hordes and Heroes talks about flipping the script on typical monster design—in a small way at least.
Absolutely brilliant!

Also, if some of these are around in an existing battle of low level pcs vs weak monsters (goblins, kobolds), there could be a crazy run to try and kill or protect the energy motes, as they can give a significant upper end to the either side!
This kind of reminds me the all vs all fight in Pirates of the Caribbean!
