Generally speaking, I don't like most fantasy novels.

If Monte's book falls into one of the small boxes of fantasy I do like, I'll read it.

I have no reason to think that will or will not be the case based on his gaming industry work. I don't actually think there's much of an overlap except when you're writing tie-in novels, which this isn't.

Game writing talent and prose-writing talent ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

I shout because a lot of folks seem unclear on this fact. Especially game writers.

Monte is a decent fiction writer, but I have yet to be grabbed by his narrative boice.

I'll check it out from the local public library.

My SOP is to get new books from the library and read them for free. If it's worth rereading, then I'll buy a copy.

Monte, is that you?

In seriousness, I have only read one short story of Monte's but I liked it so much that I have been hoping for some time that he will write a novel. So, yeah, I'm going to buy it.

This is absolutely true.

OTOH, possession of one does not preclude possession of the other. For everyone I see who assumes Joe Writer's novels must be great because his gaming books are great, I see at least two or three who assume that his novels must be poor because he's "just" a game writer.

(Not referring to anyone in this thread; just in general.)

Both assumptions, while sometimes correct, make equally inaccurate generalizations.

Yup! Just one of my many pseudonyms to hype my own work. How else do you expect me to make a buck?!? Now ... go buy five copies of Ptolus.

Fair enough. Just responding to the "sight unseen." There is no way I buy a novel just because I like the author's alternate Player's Handbook.

A lot of game writers do write good fiction. Greg Stolze is a good example, as are a lot of the Delta Green/Unknown Armies guys who also contributed to the DG anthologies. Stolze's stuff will knock you on your @$$.

Heck, I'm a game writer, and I still hope to break into fiction.

I will say this: I am aware of more game writers who they can write fiction-- and are wrong-- than I am aware of game writers who don't think they have the chops, but this is my own experience.
